Training for Sports

Calling All Athletes!  Are you a high school, collegiate or professional athlete looking to increase performance?  Are you tired of getting dominated in your Sunday rec-league? Sport-specific personal training can optimize your athletic performance and reduce the chances of injury.  With a comprehensive training program that improves core strength and balance, increases explosive power, and enhances agility and speed, you’ll significantly improve in the sport(s) you love.

Sport-specific training began with the ancient Greeks.  Galen (129-210 AD), chief physician to the Gladiators, devised training drills which replicated movements in the arena.  His gladiator drills are also referred to as functional training – exercises consisting of movements specific to a particular sport. Today, we refer to this as muscle memory.

The old belief that weight training only adds unnecessary bulk and actually hinders an athlete’s ability is now considered old-school.  Today strength training is considered essential for every sport.

Most modern athletes require a combination of explosive power, muscular endurance and maximum strength in order to excel − so sport-specific weight training requires a more refined approach than simply lifting heavy weights.  There are four core training targets for weight and resistance training:

  • Muscular strength (getting stronger)
  • Muscular hypertrophy (getting bigger muscles)
  • Muscular power (getting faster and more explosive while stronger)
  • Local muscular endurance (lasting longer while getting stronger)

Sport-specific training is like no other kind of fitness training because today’s athletes must prepare for whatever situation the game presents.  She or he must be able to execute confidently knowing they’ve thoroughly prepared for any situation or challenges which may arise.
